Types of Unclaimed Property

The state holds bank accounts, uncashed checks, insurance proceeds, stock dividends, utility refunds, and safe deposit box contents. Property becomes unclaimed when businesses cannot reach owners for three to five years.

Banks report accounts with no withdrawals or deposits. Employers report uncashed payroll checks after 180 days. Insurance companies report proceeds when beneficiaries cannot be found. Utility companies report deposits from closed accounts. Investment firms report inactive brokerage accounts and stock dividends.

The state serves as custodian for these funds. The money belongs to the owner forever. No deadline exists to claim it. Property reported 50 years ago can still be claimed today if you provide proper proof of ownership. The state guarantees payment to all legitimate claims.

Filing a Claim

File claims online or by mail. The state needs proof of ownership. Mail to 200 E. Colfax Ave., Room 141, Denver, CO 80203-1722. Or upload online. Most claims take 90 to 120 days.

Note: No deadline exists to file claims in Colorado.
